Producing DVD’s and television programmes is an interesting beast which involves working with a team toward a common goal, having tight deadlines and often even tighter budgets and wanting to create the best possible product possible.

All the roles below can be done by one person on a whole project or can be done as a stand alone job with others taking the other roles.

 

The producer is essentially the manager of a production – overseeing the entire project from beginning to end ensuring it comes within budget, on time and sticks to the brief.

 

Research is the foundation of the dvd and the process covers sourcing as much information about the topic as is available (or in some cases finding the topic itself), talking with relevant people, and visiting relevant sites. A complete set of research notes would be available at the end of the researching component.

 

The director literally turns the brief of the Producer into an actual dvd –, instructing and working with a camera crew (anything from one person to a whole team of people). The director will then instruct and work with an editor to physically edit the footage into the dvd format.

 

The scriptwriter pulls together the narration turning it into language that’s appropriate to the rest of the dvd whether that be formal or informal language.

 

While a producer is overseeing the production it is the production manager who focuses on the detail – the nuts and bolts – the car/flight/equipment bookings, scheduling a day’s work and making sure everything happens when it should and everyone knows what’s happening.
